According to a report on ABC 13, two people were hospitalized with major injuries after a recreational boat accident on Lake Houston. The incident happened near the 20200 block of Atascocita Lake Drive in Humble, TX. Early reports indicate that a boat collided with a dock. Here, our Houston boat accident attorney explains what we know about the Lake Houston boat collision and describes the key steps that you should take after a boating crash in Southeast Texas.

Boat Sustained Catastrophic Damage After Colliding With a Dock in Lake Houston

The Houston Fire Department reports that three people were aboard a recreational boat on Lake Houston. According to neighbors who witnessed the accident, the boat collided at a relatively high rate of speed with a pier. The boat was reportedly destroyed in the crash and the dock split a part into multiple pieces. One person was transported via a medical helicopter to a nearby emergency room. Another person was brought via ambulance to a hospital with a serious leg injury. As of the time of the ABC 13 report, it was still unclear as to what exactly led to the accident. The crash is still under a more comprehensive investigation.

What You Need to Do After a Recreational Boating Accident in Southeast Texas

Unfortunately, recreational boat accidents remain a serious safety issue on lakes and ponds in Texas and throughout the United States. According to data from the American Boating Association, 767 people were killed and 3,191 people were injured in boat accidents in 2020 alone. Alarmingly, the recreational boat accident fatality rate was nearly 25% higher in 2020 than it was in the previous year. If you or your loved one is hurt in a boat accident in Texas, it is imperative that you know how to protect yourself. Among other things, recreational boat accident victims should:

  • Seek Emergency Medical Care: Emergency medical needs come first after a boat accident. You should always seek medical attention after a recreational boat accident. You need to see a doctor to bring a personal injury claim in Texas.
  • Document the Crash: Recreational boat accident claims are fault-based legal cases. To recover compensation for your damages—medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, etc—you need evidence that establishes how and why the crash occurred.
  • Consult With a Boat Accident Lawyer: Recreational boat accident claims are highly complex. Victims and families do not have to navigate the legal system alone. An experienced Houston, TX boat accident lawyer will protect your rights and interests.
