According to a report from KXAN Austin, one person was airlifted to a local hospital with potentially serious injuries after a diving accident near Lake Travis, Texas. Emergency first responders state that the individual was found unconscious at the scene of a scuba diving accident. The victim did regain consciousness, but was dealing with “potentially serious injuries.”

Diving can be a fun and rewarding activity. Unfortunately, all types of diving can also be extremely dangerous if all of the proper safety precautions are not taken. All divers need to know how to protect themselves if an accident happens. Here, our Houston commercial diving accident lawyers highlight four key steps to take if you or a family member is involved in a serious diving accident.

1. Get Immediate Emergency Medical Attention

Diving is an activity that carries some inherent risks. An accident can be quite serious—with common medical issues including things like hypothermia, circulatory problems, respiratory problems, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), and drowning. The Divers Alert Network estimates that nearly 100 people are killed in diving accidents in North America each year. Many more suffer severe injuries. With accidents such as this, emergency medical attention is a must.

2. Document Exactly What Happened

To the best of your ability, try to document a commercial diving accident. Not only will this make it easier for a victim—you or your loved one—to get medical care, it will also make it easier to pursue a legal claim against the at-fault party. These accident cases are based on negligence. A commercial diving company may be legally liable even if you signed a waiver. Comprehensive evidence can help you establish fault.

3. Report the Commercial Diving Accident

Commercial diving accidents should be reported to the appropriate parties. Make sure that all companies involved in the diving operation are aware of the incident. Depending on the severity, the may also be reported to other parties, including law enforcement and the United States Coast Guard (USCG).

4. Consult With a Diving Accident Lawyer

Diving accident injury claims and wrongful death claims are complicated. You do not have to go up against a defendant and its insurance carrier(s) all alone. Consult with an experienced Texas accident attorney as soon as possible after a serious accident. Your legal representative will help you determine the right course of action to get justice and compensation. Financial support may be available for a wide range of losses, including medical bills, missed paychecks, pain and suffering, permanent disfigurement, and wrongful death.
