Deadly Boat Accident in East Texas Still Under Investigation
In the late afternoon of July 7th, 2022, local authorities received a report of a serious boat accident at the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. The incident reportedly occurred in the south part of the lake, well offshore in an open water outside of Ebenezer Park. Located approximately 70 miles north of Beaumont, the Sam Rayburn is the largest body of water located entirely within the state of Texas.
Upon arriving at the scene of the boating crash, emergency service personnel determined that a bass boat and a pontoon boat collided. A preliminary investigation revealed that the bass boat hit the broadside of the pontoon boat. Tragically, a 47-year-old man was killed in the accident. Three other people sustained serious injuries. The boat crash is still being comprehensively investigated.
Multi-Boat Collisions Remains a Serious Safety Hazard—Even if Open Waters
Boating has the potential to be hazardous. It is imperative that the proper safety precautions are taken by all parties. The United States Coast Guard (USGC) reports that more than 5,000 boats nationwide are involved in collisions each year. Boat accidents can happen for a wide range of different reasons. Multi-boat collisions remain one of the more frequent causes of boat accidents. While the majority of multi-boat accidents occur relatively close to shore—in highly trafficked areas—these accidents can and do happen in the open water. Open water multi-boat accidents can be catastrophic, even life-threatening. Immediate medical attention is a must for victims.
