According to a report from ABC 13, one person was killed and two others were seriously injured in a wrong way accident in Brazoria County. The tragic crash occurred just outside of Lake Jackson, TX. One of the motorists involved in the crash was a Brazoria County sheriff’s deputy. An investigation is still underway to determine why the driver was going in the wrong direction on a divided highway. In this blog post, our Brazoria County auto accident lawyer explains what we know about the crash and highlights the dangers of wrong way collisions in general.

Fatal Wrong Way Crash Reported On Texas State Highway 332

The wrong way collision reportedly occurred in the early morning hours of July 13th, 2022. A Brazoria County sheriff’s deputy was traveling in the northbound lane of Texas State Highway 332. The deputy noticed the oncoming headlights from another car—later determined to be a Ford sedan—that was going in the wrong direction. The officer attempted to take evasive action at the last second, but the vehicles still collided head-on.

Tragically, the passenger in the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. The driver of the Ford was transported via helicopter to an emergency medical facility in Houston with severe injuries. The Brazoria County deputy sustained serious but non life threatening injuries. The crash is still under a comprehensive investigation. At the time of reporting, it was not clear as to why the driver was going the wrong way on a divided highway.

Wrong Way Crashes are Among the Serious Type of Motor Vehicle Crashes

Wrong way accidents are relatively rare. Unfortunately, there is evidence that they are becoming more common. A recent study found that there has been an increase in wrong way collisions since 2015. Researchers believe that a rise in intoxicated driving (drunk driving and drugged driving) is likely the primary reason why wrong way collisions are on the rise. It is very alarming because most wrong way crashes are head-on collisions.

Head-on collisions are disproportionately likely to lead to catastrophic injuries and fatalities. Data from the federal government shows that only 1 in 50 car crashes nationwide is a head-on collision. Yet, head-on crashes are responsible for approximately 1 in 10 fatal crashes. Wrong way crashes are especially dangerous as they often happen on divided highways. As a consequence, the vehicles are often traveling at high rates of speed.
