Authorities report that a Harris County Flood Control boat was performing routine vegetation maintenance in west Houston. Without warning, the craft collided with a submerged metal obstruction. Unfortunately, one civilian was transported via medical helicopter to a nearby emergency room with serious injuries.

Emergency services personnel from the Houston Police Department and the Houston Fire Department were immediately dispatched to help control the scene. The root cause of the flood control boat accident is still not fully known. ABC 13 Eyewitness News reports that the Army Corps of Engineers is draining the area of the reservoir to determine exactly what the boat hit.

What to Do if You are Hurt in a Boating Accident in Texas

Unfortunately, boat accidents remain a serious safety concern. Whether you are working on a boat, being transported by a boat, or simply enjoying your time on a recreational watercraft, it is imperative that you take the proper safety precautions. If an accident does occur, you should take action to protect your health and legal rights. Among other things, this includes:

  • Getting to safety, call the authorities, and safely working to help others;
  • Seeking immediate medical attention for any injuries, even if emergency care is not needed;
  • Documenting the crash—securing any evidence as to what happened and why; and
  • Consult with an experienced Texas boat accident injury lawyer.

Boat accident injury claims are highly fact-specific legal cases. The process will depend, in part, on whether you were working while the accident occurred. If so, you may have rights under Jones Act or other maritime laws. If you were not working, you have the right to file a personal injury claim against any and all parties who negligence contributed to the boating accident.
